We are a national law firm offering a unique collection of specialisms across the commercial, public, health and insurance sectors, with offices in Birmingham, Exeter, London, Manchester and Nottingham. We have long-standing relationships with an impressive range of clients and aim to truly understand their needs to deliver an exceptional service which exceeds their expectations and makes their life easier.  We endeavour to be the best regional firm as measured by quality, client engagement and satisfaction and people retention and development. We believe that, as a truly inclusive employer, we will be able to collaborate more effectively and, by bringing diverse perspectives to our work, create a culture where difference is valued, delivering the best possible service to our broad client base. We also strive to create meaningful personal and professional development opportunities and offer flexible working in support of a good work-life balance.

Why is this role important and how does it fit into the team, department & wider firm?

This is an exciting role and the main objective is to provide support to our French group. The successful candidate would ideally be a commercial solicitor, either general commercial or contentious. You would be expected to have a broad understanding of English business law in order to support our French Group Manager on matters involving our French client base and taking an active role in business development in line with our French Group business plan.

What does the role involve?

  • Advising mainly French clients upon matters of English business law (i.e. commercial law, property law, subject to the candidate’s area of expertise), in conjunction with fee earners from other teams where relevant.
  • Assisting English clients when required in the same area of expertise as above.
  • Helping develop and implement marketing and new business development strategies for the French Group and where relevant for the various Target Market Groups of the firm.
  • Undertaking legal research, advising on the implications of new legislation, regulations, directives and case law.
  • Undertaking marketing activities including, but not limited to, attending networking events, arranging meetings with prospects, clients and intermediaries (both in the UK and in France), presenting seminars, and contributing to tenders and pitches amongst other things.
  • Actively contributing to the contents of the French Group’s webpage, drafting newsletters, bulletins and/ or legal updates to be circulated to French clients.
  • Recording time promptly and meeting financial goals with a good track record in achieving both targets.
  • Willing to travel to other offices of the firm when required, for client and/or team building purposes.
  • Supporting the wider team in delivering exceptional client service.

What technical skills are required for someone to be successful and enjoy the role?

  • We would expect the successful candidate to provide clear advice and guidance of a high standard to the firm’s French client base on a range of matters and to actively participate in business development activities. Our client’s expectations are that all business is conducted in French; it is therefore an advantage for applicants who are fluent in French to a high business standard.
  • French/English but ideally UK qualified (preferably with a track record of post qualified experience).
  • It would be an advantage for the candidate to have some knowledge of the French legal system.
  • Demonstrable experience and technical expertise advising clients on relevant area of legal specialism (i.e. English commercial law, property law or corporate law).
  • Excellent legal drafting skills, ability to provide clear, concise and commercially relevant advice and pragmatic solutions to French clients.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of legal developments and government policy within relevant sectors.
