Ready ? OK, let’s start now.

Faute commune No. 2 : Insure vs. Ensure [attention : beaucoup d’anglo-saxons s’y trompent aussi… !]

Incorrect : « The law firm partner sent the documents by FedEx, because she wanted to insure that they would arrive the next day. »
Correct : « The law firm partner sent the documents by FedEx, because she wanted to ensure that they would arrive the next day. »
Explication : En anglais, « to insure » ou « « insurer » a toujours le sens de l’assurance pour proteger les personnes/les biens (Axa, Swiss Life, la MAIF, etc.)

Faute commune No. 3 : Advices vs. advice

Incorrect : « The ambitious Senior Associate asked his Partner if he had any advices to help him to become a Partner »
Correct : « The ambitious Senior Associate asked his Partner if he had any advice to help him to become a Partner. »

Faute commune No. 4 : To join vs. attach

Incorrect : « I received your email, but you forgot to join the file ! »
Correct : « I received your email, but you forgot to attach the file ! »
Explication : « to join » to « devenir membre » ou « devenir partie de » en anglais. « To enclose » = « joindre »

Now, here is the written version of my audio recording...

« Hello Everyone.
My name is Ken Fagan and I’m speaking to you on October 6th, 2014.
As usual, today, I’m going to speak to you about 4 mistakes that French people make very often in English.
Also as usual, I will only read from the correct version of each example.
OK, are we ready to begin ?

Common mistake No. 1 : do you see the number one million in the first example ?
Well, here’s how we would read that number in English : one, comma, zero, zero, zero, comma, zero, zero, zero, period zero, zero. »

Ready for Common mistake No. 2 ?
I’ll begin by pronouncing the 2 words you see : « insure » and « ensure ».
I’ll repeat that : « insure » and « ensure »
Now I’ll read the correct example : « The law firm partner sent the documents by FedEx, because she wanted to ensure that they would arrive the next day. »

OK, let’s go to common mistake No. 3.
Here goes :
« The ambitious Senior Associate asked his Partner if he had any advice to help him to become a Partner. »

Now let’s go Common mistake No. 4
« I received your email, but you forgot to attach the file ! »
I’ll say that again.

Well, that’s the end of this edition of my monthly column on this site.
I hope that, as usual, it’s been very helpful to you.
If it has been helpful, I hope that you will tell your friends and colleagues about it.
Thank you very much.
Until next time, I’m Ken Fagan.
Bye Bye.
